Abstract
Theaverageannualrainfallof887mmintheMalharsub-watershedasrecordedfromtheBalichakrastationdata. 80%,13%and8%oftheannualrainfalloccursduringkharif,rabiandsummerseasonsrespectivelyandexhibitedahighertemporalvariability. Theevapotranspirationestimationtooldevelopedindicatesthatthewatershedwaterbalanceisindeficit.Thecropping&irrigationchoicesarenotappropriateandneedtobealteredtoshiftthedeficitwaterbalance. Theestimatedrunoffavailabletouseis12mmforanaverageannualrainfallof622mm(2009-2017).Theutilizablegroundwateris49.7mm(70%of71mmrechargeestimated).Thismeansthetotalavailablewaterresourcecombiningthesoilmoisturestoreforkharif&rabi(479mm)andutilizablerunoffplusrechargeis541(=479+12+50) Theaverageactualevapotranspirationestimatedinthewatershedbasedonthecurrentlanduseandirrigationpracticesforthekharifandrabiseasonsis515mm.Hencetheamountofwateruseforkharifandrabiseasonsmaybeestimatedas644mm(i.e125%ofAET).Thisdemandforthetwoseasonsishigherby103mm,i.e.(644-541).TheAETinJune-Septmonthsisonly59%ofrainfall.Hence,thereisagoodopportunitytoharvesttheexcesswaterthroughwatershedmanagementpracticesforutilizingduringrabiseason. ThetotalnumberofwellspresentinMalharSub-watershedasperLRIdatais17Borewells.ThegroundwaterleveldataobtainedfromDept.ofMines&GeologyfortheneareststationBalichakra.Thegroundwaterlevelduringtheyears2011-2017wereslightlyvarying,whereasduringtheyear2014wasfoundconstant
