Abstract

Theaverageannualrainfallof631mmintheIndargisub-watershedasrecordedfromtheKoppalstationdata. 65%,20%and15%oftheannualrainfalloccursduringKharif,RabiandSummerseasonsrespectivelyandexhibitedahighertemporalvariability. Theevapotranspirationestimationtooldevelopedindicatesthatthewatershedwaterbalanceisindeficit.Thecropping&irrigationchoicesarenotappropriateandneedtobealteredtoshiftthedeficitwaterbalance. Theestimatedrunoffavailabletouseis73mmforanaverageannualrainfallof596mm(2009-2017).Theutilizablegroundwateris31mm(70%of44mmrechargeestimated).Thismeansthetotalavailablewaterresourcecombiningthesoilmoisturestoreforkharif&rabi(178mm)andutilizablerunoffplusrechargeis282(=178+31+73) Theaverageactualevapotranspirationestimatedinthewatershedbasedonthecurrentlanduseandirrigationpracticesforthekharifandrabiseasonsis550mm.Hencetheamountofwateruseforkharifandrabiseasonsmaybeestimatedas687mm(i.e.125%ofAET).Thisdemandforthetwoseasonsishigherby405mm,i.e.(687-282).TheAETinJune-Septmonthsisonly47%ofrainfall.Hence,thereisagoodopportunitytoharvesttheexcesswaterthroughwatershedmanagementpracticesforutilizingduringrabiseason. Thetotalnumberofwellspresentinindargisub-watershedasperLRIdatais238(236-borewellsand2-openwell).ThegroundwaterlevelshownaboveisfromthedataobtainedfromDept.ofMines&GeologyfortheneareststationHonnahunsi
